1. Santorini

Santorini is a volcanic island in the Cyclades group, famous for its stunning ocean views, quaint towns, and fantastic beaches. It is arguably Greece’s most picturesque island.

2. Mykonos

The main town on Mykonos.

Island hopping is the favourite activity for many visitors to Greece, and Mykonos is another brilliant island in the Cyclades group – other top islands that didn’t make this list include Ios and Paros. Mykonos is known for its traditional whitewashed houses, windmills, mazy streets, excellent beaches and vibrant night life.

3. Athens

The Greek capital has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years and is widely considered to be the birthplace of Western civilization and democracy. Therefore the city is packed full of fascinating history, architecture and culture.

4. Crete

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, meaning there is much more than just a handful of beaches and towns. Crete has a mix of bustling metropolitan cities and quiet seaside villages. The landscape is much more varied than other islands, with rugged mountains and gorges for hikers to explore.

The Metéora, literally meaning “suspended in the air” or “in the heavens above” is one of the largest and most important complexes of Greek Orthodox monasteries. Six monasteries, dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries, are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, providing an awe inspiring sight.

The ruins of Delphi are a UNESCO World Heritage site. In ancient times Delphi was the site of the most important oracle of the god Apollo, and revered throughout the Greek world as the centre of the universe. Besides the ruins, the surrounding countryside is great for hiking and cycling.

Zakynthos or Zante is a large island with a wide appeal for all types of visitors. Laganas is the main nightlife area and is best avoided unless you want to party. Elsewhere there are many beauty spots including the Blue Caves, the surely recognisable Navagio Bay, and of course plenty of beaches.

8. Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece – notably in Ancient Greek Mythology it was the home of the Twelve Gods (Olympians). There are many trails and paths around this beautiful area – if you wish to go to the top, seek local advice, as you will have to stop overnight in one of the refuges.

Rhodes is a popular island to visit because of its combination of beaches, archaeological sites, and medieval town. Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

10. Corfu

Corfu is yet another Greek island, and one of the best for beaches. The beaches on the West side of the island are sandier, while the beaches on the East tend to have calmer waters.
