The Ultimate South West Coast Australia Road Trip: Perth to Esperance and Back
Picture this: endless stretches of pristine coastline, powder-white beaches that look like they belong in the Caribbean, and some of the most remote yet accessible wilderness in Australia. After spending two weeks driving the South West Australian corner coast from Perth to Esperance and back, I can honestly say this is one of the most underrated road trips in the world.
Why This Route is Perfect for Backpackers
Unlike the overcrowded East Coast, Western Australia offers incredible value for money, fewer crowds, and experiences that will blow your mind. The infrastructure is excellent, petrol stations are frequent enough, and the camping options are both affordable and spectacular.
The Route Overview
Total Distance: Approximately 2,200km Recommended Duration: 7-14 days Best Time: October to April (avoid peak summer heat in inland areas)
Route Summary: Perth → Wave Rock (via York) → Esperance → Cape Le Grand National Park → Albany → Denmark → Margaret River Region → Busselton → Bunbury → Perth
Car Hire: Getting Sorted
You really need a car or van for this trip, public transport is limited to say the least.

- Bargain Car Rentals: No-frills option perfect for backpackers

Stage 1: Perth to Wave Rock (350km, 3.5 hours)

The Journey
Leave Perth early and take the Great Eastern Highway through the Avon Valley. Stop in York (100km from Perth) for a coffee and to stretch your legs. This historic town has beautiful heritage buildings and decent cafes.
Wave Rock
Entry Fee: $12 per vehicle Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon for photos
Wave Rock is exactly what it sounds like – a 15-metre high granite formation that looks like a massive wave about to break. It’s touristy, and just a pitstop really, but still quite impressive. The nearby Hippo’s Yawn rock formation is worth the short walk.

Final Thoughts
This road trip changed my perspective on Australia completely. Western Australia has everything the East Coast offers but with a fraction of the crowds and often at better prices. The beaches are genuinely world-class, the people are incredibly friendly, and you’ll have experiences that simply aren’t possible anywhere else in the world.
The kangaroos at Lucky Bay alone make the entire trip worthwhile, but you’ll discover so much more. From the dramatic coastline at Albany to the pristine wilderness of Cape Le Grand, every day brings something new and spectacular.
Don’t rush this trip. Give yourself time to soak in each location, and prepare to fall in love with one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Western Australia will surprise you, challenge you, and ultimately win you over completely.
Ready to book? Start planning at least 2-3 months in advance, especially if travelling during peak season (December-February). Book your car hire first, then accommodation, particularly for Cape Le Grand camping spots which fill up quickly.
Safe travels, and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime.
